Primark confirms plans to expand own branded cafes

Primark, the fashion retail chain, has told Beverage Business World that it plans to roll out more of it own branded cafes within its stores in the coming year.

It currently has three of its own brand cafes called Primarket Café, in its Birmingham, Cardiff and Braehead, Glasgow stores.

Primarket Café uses only Fairtrade certified beans and gives 5% of the total cost of every kilo of coffee sold in-store back to the coffee bean growers. Takeaway cups are compostable, and customers get 10p off when they bring their own reusable cup.

The fashion retailer currently has 16 café sites across the UK and Ireland with partners including Costa and Insomnia.

Gather & Gather, which is part of Mitie’s, the specialist catering business, opened the new in-store café for Primark at the Braehead Shopping Centre in Glasgow, earlier this month.

As well as a range of speciality coffees, frappes, iced teas and soft drinks, the café will offer a variety of hot and cold snacks. The coffee served is Gather & Gather’s own specialty blend of coffee, Camino.

This is the second café that Gather & Gather has opened in a Primark store, following the launch of the Central Perk Café at Primark Manchester in June. Gather & Gather has managed catering at Primark’s offices in Reading and Dublin for the past four years.

In Birmingham, Primark also recently opened the Primark Café with Disney, serving freshly prepared hot and cold food and drinks in a Disney themed setting.

The café allows customers to use an interactive game zone and enjoy a unique Disney themed menu, including freshly prepared hot and cold food, and drinks all day.

A Primark spokesperson said: “Primark is proud to offer our customers a wide range of food and beverage options across our stores. We launched our first own brand food and beverage outlet, the Primarket Coffee Cart, in our Dublin Mary Street store in November 2018.

“More recently, we opened the Primarket Café, in our Birmingham, Cardiff and Braehead stores, and plan to roll the cafes out to a number of other locations in the coming year.”

Allister Richards, managing director at Gather & Gather, said: “Following the recent launch of the Central Perk Café at Primark Manchester, it’s a pleasure to once again be collaborating on a new café for Primark customers to enjoy. We’re proud that Primark share our passion for sustainability and we look forward to expanding our partnership.”
