Manumit, Well Grounded and Second Shot announced as Charity Partners

Manumit Coffee Roasters, Second Shot and Well Grounded have been announced as European Coffee Expo 2019’s Charity Partners, after creating a huge impact with the event’s organisers in May this year.

Each business was chosen by Quinic Events, the owner of European Coffee Expo, for its enlightened and inspirational approach in using coffee to make positive changes to people suffering from social deprivation, homelessness and modern slavery.

Manumit, Second Shot and Well Grounded each received a substantial donation.

Well Grounded (featured as the Big Interview in this week’s edition of Coffee Business World) will use the donation to fund a trainee.

Eve Wagg, founder of Well Grounded, the UK’s only social enterprise training academy, said: “The donation will go directly to supporting our trainees into work. It costs us £1,500 to transition someone from unemployment through training, mentorship, employment support and into sustained work, so it will ultimately get someone a job!”

Manumit, the not-for-profit roasters helping survivors of modern slavery rebuild their lives, is planning to buy two bikes, one for deliveries and another to use as a ‘brew bike’.

Esther Gibbs, Manumit’s strategic operations manager, explained: “One of the challenges we have is that although it’s not specialty coffee, it’s not really meant to be drunk with milk and sugar, so we’re planning to get out and about on the bike to teach people how to enjoy our coffee.”

Along with teaching individuals how to roast, Manumit also offers barista training and Gibbs is currently undertaking SCA-training to ‘train the trainer’.

Founder of Second Shot Coffee, the East London coffee shop tackling homelessness one espresso at a time, Julius Ibrahim said: “The donation was amazing, we’ve actually got some exciting things coming up with a new store, so the donation has gone toward fuelling expansion and spreading our mission!”

Quinic Events' chief executive John Bednall said: “Hearing about the amazing work being undertaken by Manumit, Second Shot and Well Grounded was inspiring and left us, as the show’s organisers, wanting to do more to support them. We’re delighted to hear how the donations are being used and look forward to supporting them throughout the year and at European Coffee Expo next May.”

In the run-up to European Coffee Expo 2019 next spring, Coffee Business World will be bringing news and updates from the Charity Partners, which will also have a strong presence at the show.

  • European Coffee Expo will take place on May 21-22 at London Olympia.
