BRITA is encouraging people to go plastic-free for two days this month, as it teams up with the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) for the fourth year running to support its plastic challenge to avoid single-use items for July.

Anyone signing up for BRITA’s easier two-day plastic-free option can received a starter pack, full of helpful suggestions on how to avoid single-use-plastics.

Coffee Business World editor Kate Oppenheim, is taking up BRITA’s call-to-action for 48-hours next week – July 16-17.

BRITA said: “With between 5-15 million tonnes of plastic currently ending up in our oceans each year, it’s time to take drastic action.”

‘Cost’ is barrier to going green

Last month, BRITA revealed that while 85% of hospitality business would consider themselves sustainable, almost half don’t have specific corporate social responsibility (CSR) targets in place.

In new research from BRITA Professional, ‘Life is Better Filtered; The planet around you’, cost was cited by 40% of hospitality businesses as the biggest barrier to sustainability, alongside rising business rates, the fallout of Brexit and staff shortages.

“Despite these barriers, operators are making steps to improve their green credentials, including 57% of businesses aiming to ban plastic straws and 25% offering discounts to consumers with refill coffee cups or water bottles,” said BRITA.

“Quick wins, such as aligning with sustainable suppliers, which not only provide sustainable products but also have their own environmental programmes in place, will also help support CSR objectives and make long-term improvements. Strong sustainability credentials can also be used as a tool to address challenges such as staff shortages; research shows two-thirds of millennials would refuse a job if a potential employer failed to have robust CSR practices in place,
