UK leads Europe with coffee shop expansion

The UK leads Europe with greatest expansion of coffee outlets, the Allegra World Coffee Portal’s Project Café Europe 2019 report has revealed.

The report also said that the UK remains Europe’s most developed coffee shop market, with a burgeoning crop of 5th Wave operators driving innovation and influence across the continent.  

It also said that “ongoing uncertainty” regarding the UK’s future relationship with Europe continues to frustrate planning and investment. Labour shortages, rising costs and diminishing consumer confidence are causing serious concern among coffee businesses.

SCA Barista Championships open for entries

Entries are open for the 2019 UK Barista Championship, which will give the winners the change of becoming the next World Champion.

There will be 12 places each available in six heats, which will be held across the country during January and February 2019.

The SCA UK will be awarding Heat Winner and Runner Up certificates for competitors of each of the regional heats. 

Each finalist will have 15 minute set up time, 7 minute competition time to present two espressos and two milk beverages.

These will lead into the 2019 UKBC Finals, which will take place in March 2019.


Craft brewer Brewdog launches own roastery

Craft brewer Brewdog has started to roast its own coffee to supply its UK pub chain. The coffee will be available to any customers that order an espresso or French press cafetiere.

The brewer has been working with its own Ellon roastery, sourcing and crafting coffee beans from Brazil. The beans come from Fazenda Passeio – the heart of Brazilian coffee country. It has also started to harness some of the casks in its barrel store to create a barrel-aged BrewDog coffee blend.

The brewer is also planning to make the coffee available for consumers to purchase from the bars.

On its blog Brewdog said: “The parallels between artisan coffee and craft beer are obvious – both take dedication, innovation and a passion for working with the raw ingredients. We love being able to serve coffee in our bars to showcase these similarities – and now we love even more the fact that this coffee is roasted and packaged in our Ellon brewhouse, right alongside our craft beer.”


BRITA Professional signs sponsorship deal with SCA

BRITA Professional, has agreed a three-year sponsorship of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) UK from 2019 to 2021.

BRITA Professional will be supporting the leading SCA competitions, including the UK Brewers Cup Championship and the UK Coffee Roasters Championship. As part of its sponsorship it will be the supplier of filtered water at the competitions, using its expertise to tailor the water filter based on the specific requirements and location of each event.

BRITA Professional will also be providing all judges and competitors with a BRITA fill&go reusable filtered water bottle

Steve Buckmaster, sales director at BRITA Professional, said: “We’re devoted to helping businesses serve high-quality coffee and our goal is to demonstrate the huge role water plays in this. With water making up to 98% of the drink, it’s no surprise that it has such an impact on the taste, aroma and appearance of coffee.”

Nestlé creates research institute for packaging

Nestlé has created the Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences, which is dedicated to the development of environmentall- friendly packaging solutions.

The Nestlé Institute of Packaging Sciences, which is part of Nestlé’s global research organisation, will be located in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Research focus areas will include recyclable, biodegradable or compostable polymers, functional paper, as well as new packaging concepts and technologies to increase the recyclability of plastic packaging.

Nestlé ceo Mark Schneider said: "We want to be a leader in developing the most sustainable packaging solutions for our food and beverage products. To achieve this, we are enhancing our research capabilities to develop new packaging materials and solutions.
