BaxterStorey launches first vegan cafe

BaxterStorey has launched its first entirely vegan café at the Royal College of Art in its flagship Kensington Campus.

With three catered campuses across Kensington, Battersea and White City, the newly refurbished outlet is within its 'iconic building' in the heart of ‘Albertopolis’ district of London.

BaxterStorey opened the café in response to requests from the Student Union for an outlet to cater for the increasing number of vegans and vegetarians in the student population. With over 2,300 students enrolled at the university, a number set to increase in coming years, the café was designed in collaboration with the Student Union’s president and with support from Bentley Consulting.

With most students based on campus, the new vegan hot spot offers a nutritious all-day grazing menu with energy boosting artisan coffee using plant-based milk alternatives.

As the first vegan-only café in the BaxterStorey portfolio, there are ambitions to expand the theme to the Battersea campus when it opens in 2020.

Colicci partners with Royal Parks to open cafes and kiosks

Colicci, an ‘artisan family brand of cafés and kiosks’ in London, has partnered with the Royal Parks to launch two new cafés, The Serpentine Café in Hyde Park and Storey’s Gate Café, in collaboration with chef Theo Randall, in St James’s Park.

In addition, Colicci will open nine kiosks this autumn, offering a range of locally sourced food and drink, including London’s first health-focused park café. Award-winning architecture and design practice, Mizzi Studio, has been appointed to design the new outlets, which will be built at noteworthy locations including the entrances to Hyde Park, Green Park and St James’s Park.

With the first kiosks installed this autumn and the last opening in March 2019, the cafés and kiosks are designed to enhance the visitor experience, serving healthy breakfast, brunch and lunch using the finest local and seasonal ingredients, alongside freshly baked cakes and pastries from the Colicci bakery, locally roasted single origin coffee and ice cream, the cafes and kiosk structures are organically-inspired and will be sympathetic to the Grade I listed landscapes of the different parks. .

By pioneering a ‘collection’ of revolutionary kiosks and cafés we have pushed the boundaries in design and architecture. Now you can buy your cup of coffee from a sculpture in the park.”

Beacon highlights top trends of 2018 that are here to stay

Cold-brew coffee and iced drinks are becoming increasingly popular within the coffee sector, according to purchasing company Beacon, that has produced its top trends of 2018 that are set to stay.

Working with its suppliers, Beacon has identified the latest trends which aren’t going anywhere within the foodservice sector.

The research identified 40% of consumers having purchased an iced drink in the last 12 months, and 30% saying that an iced blended coffee is their favourite option, according to Beacon’s supplier Matthew Algie.

Cold brew is one of the most popular coffee trends in 2018, specifically nitro cold brew – a cold brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas and forced through a draft system. This results in a rich, velvety, creamy head that is extremely popular amongst consumers.

A traditional British treat, the afternoon tea experience has evolved in recent years, with bookings increasing by 54% over the past two years, according to OpenTable’s research. And other healthy hot beverages that provide nutritional, physical and emotional benefits are on the up. Tetley Tea found that 18% of consumers will choose a green tea, 17% a speciality black tea and 15% a herbal tea.

Beacon also identified that over half of UK consumers were willing to pay up to 10% more for their food if they knew it was Made in Britain.

Hospitality businesses champion contribution to the High Street

Monday (October 9) saw 150 hospitality business from across the UK - including Caffé Nero, InterContinental Hotels Group and JD Wetherspoons assembled at Westminster to meet with over 60 MPs to champion their sector’s contribution to the High Street.

Backed by UKHospitality, the UK’s leading hospitality trade association, and its 'AIM HIGH' campaign, which is calling for a digital sales tax to freeze business rates increases, doubling the National Insurance Contribution for employers, a level-playing field for property and online businesses regulation and delivering a Brexit that allows the industry to meet its workforce needs without extra costs.

The hospitality industry employs 3.2 million people across the UK and contributes £130 billion to the UK economy – more than automotive, pharma and aeronautics combined.  It ranks as a 'top seven' employer in every region of the UK, ranking the third highest in some regions and accounts for up to 11% of the regional workforce.

New research by Ignite Economics, also launched today, has predicted that the sector’s workforce and contribution to the economy could begin to drop by 2022. 

Teatulia tea shop and bar has A-star appeal

Next Monday (October 15) sees the opening of Teatulia, reports Living,etc, October 4 a tiny tea shop, cocktail bar and literary salon.

The 16-cover venue, library and retail space boasts a varied tea and cocktail menu and ever-changing array of specially curated books, the current selection chosen by actress Tilda Swinton.

Teatulia will serve six types of tea by day and at night, the bar will serve up a selection of tea-based cocktails.

Boutique cinema concept creates cafe bar brand

Tivoli, a brand new boutique cinema concept, is creating a cinema / stylish café bar brand that is set to open in Bath’s SouthGate Centre in December.

Working with award-winning design house Run For The Hills, will offer “an impressive range of scratch-cooked food and beverages to create a bold new concept, charismatic neighbourhood destination with unmatched cinematic and dining experience.
