Colicci unveils suppliers for Royal Parks cafés and kiosks

Colicci, the artisan family brand of cafés and kiosks, has unveiled the suppliers it will be working with when it opens its 11 venues with the Royal Parks in 2019.

Small batch London roaster Notes will supply its coffee while its non-homogenised milk will be supplied by the Estate Dairy. Teas will be supplied from Birchalls while soft drinks are provided by Cawston, San Pelle and Coke with ethically sourced mineral water Belu.

Colicci unveiled earlier this month that there will be two new landmark cafés, The Serpentine Café in Hyde Park and Storey’s Gate Café, in collaboration with chef Theo Randall, in St James’s Park.  

A family of nine sculptural kiosks will open early next year, offering a range of locally sourced food and drink, including London’s first health-focused park café.

Colicci’s director, Rob Colicci, said:  “We’re absolutely delighted to have extended our long-standing partnership with The Royal Parks. Now you can buy your cup of coffee from a sculpture in the park.”


Origin Coffee is on the recruitment trail

Origin Coffee is on the recruitment trail looking for both a head of coffee and a production roasting manager.

The head of coffee is to lead on product development and a new green coffee buying programme.The senior position is part of the strategic senior team at Origin.

The production roasting manager will be responsible for managing its operations in Cornwall and will work closely with the new head of coffee.

Paddy & Scott's signs deal with TA Hotel Collection and founder receives honorary award

Suffolk-based coffee brand Paddy & Scott's, has signed a deal with the TA Hotel Collection to supply coffee, machinery and training to the groups' hotels and restaurants. 

As part of the new contract, six hotels and restaurants will now be serving crafted coffee from Paddy & Scott's farm in Kenya, including The Swan at Lavenham, The Brudenell Hotel, Thorpeness Hotel & Country Club, The Crown Woodbridge, The White Lion Hotel and Sea Spice Restaurant in Aldeburgh. As part of the deal, it will also be creating a barista training programme and visiting each venue regularly to drive quality. 

Scott Russell, founder and ceo has been recognised with an honourary award by The University of Suffolk. Scott was one of ten individuals who received awards from the University this year. These awards recognise notable contribution to the educational or cultural well-being of society, in business, industry, commerce or enterprise.

Scott, who becomes an honorary fellow said: "I am honoured, shocked, but so incredibly proud to accept this award. It goes to show that hard work, determination, self-belief and ambition can drive you forward no matter how humble your beginnings."

In 2016, Scott founded the Meru Farm and Ruiga School project in Kenya, a world first collaboration between the consumer and coffee grower driving sustainability and education, whilst breaking down trade barriers that encourage free trade amongst the whole coffee growing community.


Starbucks to train 50,000 coffee farmers in China

Starbucks Coffee Company said it will strengthen its efforts to create to help coffee farming communities in China out of poverty. By the end of 2023, its Starbucks China Farmer Support Centre aims wxto train 50,000 farmers across the region, while improving the education and health of 6,000 children in 30 villages.

A pilot program has been launched with China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) in Conggang and Nankang villages in Yunnan Baoshan prefecture. This approximate RMB3.5 million (US$500,000) initial grant, from The Starbucks Foundation, administered by the non-profit organization, Give2Asia, is the first of many partnerships to positively change the lives of China’s coffee farming communities.

More than 1,000 farmers, and nearly 400 school-aged children in these two villages, will be directly impacted through the training  and enhanced education and health examinations for children.

US Coffee shop market still booming

The $45.4bn US coffee shop market is forecast to exceed 40,800 outlets by 2023, according to Allegra World Coffee Portal Project Café USA 2019.

The market has seen healthy growth increasing by 3.8% in outlets over the last 12 months to reach 35,616 stores nationwide.

The report said that the US continues to lead global coffee shop innovation across quality and product development. An influx of international investment is pushing once niche artisan principles into the mainstream across the US coffee and food-focused sectors, with premiumisation a key marketing strategy deployed to sustain growth.

Allegra anticipates a burgeoning 5th Wave sector will continue to shape the premium market, propelled by growing consumer sophistication and investment from large multinationals.


UKHospitality welcomes Government move on health

UKHospitality has welcomed the Government’s announcement to promote healthy attitudes to food and drink and highlighted the continuing efforts of the hospitality sector.

The trade body has also urged against any disproportionate measures that may undermine businesses in the sector. 

UKHospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls said: “The hospitality sector is committed to promoting healthy attitudes to food and drink. Venues have worked hard to reformulate menus to reduce calories and provide greater choice and transparency. 

“It should be noted that, for the vast majority of customers, eating and drinking out is not an everyday occurrence. We are ready and willing to support the Government, but we need to avoid any kneejerk measures that threaten businesses disproportionately.”


Elan Café opens fourth site

Elan Café, the premium café chain, has opened its fourth site on the fourth floor of Selfridges. The site joins its other London venues at Mayfair, Knightbridge and Oxford Circus.

The cafes, which are decorated in floral pink, are often called London's most instagrammable cafes.

It works with Union for its coffee and teas are from Norwich based Hannah Sell’s Teas. Rude Health is Élan’s partner in alternative milks.
