Great summer for drinkers

Drink-led pubs and bars in London outperformed the rest of the sector and the country in July, according to the latest Business Tracker from CGA, Coffer Peach and RSM.

The heatwave and England’s longer than-expected participation in the World Cup were good news for pubs, which saw like-for-likes sales rise 2.7%, but put more pressure on restaurant chains, which saw like-for-like sales fall 4.8%.

Peter Martin, vice-president of business insight group CGA, said: “Drink-led pubs and bars performed by far the strongest… It seems people just wanted to go out for a drink.”

Trevor Watson, executive director at Davis Coffer Lyons, added: “London had a particularly strong month with overall like-for-like sales up 2.6%... the rest of the country had a more difficult period with like-for-like sales down 0.9%."

The Coffer Peach Tracker monitors sales and analyses performance data of 47 operating groups within the bar, pub and restaurant sector, including Le Pain Quotidien, Loungers and Giraffe with a combined turnover of £9bn.
