The Gentlemen Baristas to hit 12 sites
The Gentlemen Baristas, the eight-strong London-based independent coffee shop chain, is set to hit 12 sites by the end of the year with more set to follow in 2020.
Henry Ayers, who established the business with his partner Ed Parkes in June 2014, told Beverage Business World that new sites are set to open across London by the end of the year including New Oxford Street, Mayfair, Victoria and Hammersmith.
These will see The Gentlemen Baristas expand further across London from its heartland in the Southwark and London Bridge areas.
Ayers said that there were plans for more sites in 2020.
“Next year looks like more sites in London. Long-term we will look beyond London but in the short term for the next year or so we will remain here,” said Ayers.
“It is really important that we don’t dilute the brand and we are investing a lot of time and effort in training manuals and training programmes. We have a set procedure for roll-out and we have an openings team.”
Ayers admitted that “no-one looked at us or touched us in the first two years,” but it was now getting offered sites every week.
“We are now bombarded and we can be choosy which is great,” he said.
The company opened its own roastery in Shadwell at the beginning of the year and has recently opened its training school on the site. This has helped with its own coffee shop training as well as with customers for its wholesale business.
“Our customers are realising that coffee is not just a tick box exercise it needs to be as good as the rest of the menu. We are seeing people invest in quality coffee and that is definitely a changed mentality,” he said.
It currently has around 90 wholesale customers, with the majority being independent operators in the London area, although there are plans to expand this beyond the heartland of the capital.
The company is committed to sustainability, using an electric van to deliver to both its own sites and wholesale customers. By the end of the year all its packaging will be bio-degradable.
