Foodco's Jamaica Blue plans more rapid growth

Jamaica Blue, the modern café concept from Foodco, owners of Muffin Break, is looking to open three to four new sites in the UK before the end of the year.

More openings within Next fashion retailer stores are on the cards, as well as sites in shopping centres and retail parks. Jamaica Blue’s latest opening was above a Next outlet in the Junction 9 retail park in Wednesbury, West Midlands.

The café concept operates through franchises and made its debut into the UK with its first café at the Lion Yard Shopping Centre in Cambridge in December 2016. It currently has five, including one hospital location (at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, Berks).

Its sister brand Muffin Break opened three new sites in August alone, taking the number of operations to 65, with plans for another seven to eight this year.

Foodco differentiates the two brands by describing Muffin Break as a café bakery, delivering fresh food ‘to-go’ on site, whereas Jamaica Blue is a casual dining concept, which offers a to-go elements, but also a full menu.

Both operations have a strong coffee proposition, with Jamaica Blue’s offer being a single origin, own blend, which is roasted exclusively for it in the UK.

The company describes Jamaica Blue as having been built on two simple beliefs: to source the very best coffee; and to use only fresh, premium ingredients to deliver contemporary café dishes with a twist.

“Our name, Jamaica Blue, is drawn from the majestic Blue Mountains of Jamaica, one of the best coffee producing regions in the world and home to our exclusive Wallenford Estate® Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee,” it said.

“Our simple philosophy of great coffee and food, together with our passionate crew of chefs, baristas and service team are the Jamaica Blue recipe for continued success.  From our humble beginnings twenty-odd years ago, we now have a growing international network of over 170 stores operating in seven countries.”

Foodco operates 600 sites globally across seven countries and was founded in Australia in 1989.
