Bewiched set to launch into 'drive-thru' coffee market

Bewiched Coffee, which claims to be Northamptonshire biggest independent coffee operator, is looking to break into the coffee ‘drive-thru’ sector, with two sites planned for next year.

New stores are set to open in Peterborough and Higham Ferrers later this year, taking the number of sites currently operated by the business to 10.

Matt Fountain, who founded Bewiched in 2010 with Richard Wagg in 2010, told Coffee Business World that its ‘organic’ expansion was set to continue apace next year and is to include two ‘drive-thru’ locations – a part of the market currently dominated by Costa and Starbucks.

“Our challenge is going to be finding the good sites for us, before someone else gets them,” explained Fountain, adding that Bewiched was about to open a central food lab and distribution centre.

“We believe the future of the UK coffee market lies in ‘drive-thru' coffee because of the convenience nature of the product. It’s a big stretch to find the right sites and launch into the sector, but I believe we’re big enough to take the plunge next year.”

Fountain said the drive-thru sector was attractive, with the potential to achieve stronger trade than on the high street, especially as it planned to have a strong food offering aimed at the breakfast market.

The new distribution site, which incorporates a kitchen prep area and food lab to create food for the sites, includes a small training area and is about bringing consistency and quality of offer in line across the business.

“Our end game is to have a central distribution where we make daily deliveries to our sites of the products made by us, fresh,” explained Fountain, to create a ‘brand standard’ which was reinforced across the business.

  • The Bewiched brand name comes without the T, as in sandwich, not under a witch’s spell, explained Fountain, adding that the unusual spelling always created a talking point on social media and in the press.
